Our work for Petroglyph Development (a wholly-owned corporation of the Snuneymuxw First Nation) is grounded in their aspiration to realize the economic potential of the Snuneymuxw First Nation, bringing forth their Snuneymuxw Snuw’uyulth, the teachings passed down from their Ancestors and elders, into built form.
The site is an abandoned farm adjacent to the Chase River, just south of Nanaimo’s downtown core. A primary driver for the project is social and ecological sustainability, so that future residents are provided with meaningful opportunities to connect both to each other and to the land.
The preliminary design takes its formal cues from the scale and massing of the surrounding single family neighbourhood. Density is maximized on the upper field, to both protect the lower riparian zone and mature forest, and to maximize the provision of much-needed housing in the region - particularly for larger families.
