The Food and Beverage Innovation Centre (FBIC) is a new facility for the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at UBC as a dedicated space to food processing research and development and to bridge academic research with commercial opportunities. The building features two main laboratory components, one focused on Fermentation and the other on Food Processing supported by highly specialized equipment, innovation kitchens and office and meeting areas. The design of the building intends to bring together educational opportunities and the advancement of food technologies for the community. The facility will enable innovations in food security and sustainability that will help shape the future food system in the region.
The most interesting pieces of equipment in the processing end of the building have been framed for the viewing of students passing by. The framing of this piece of equipment will form part of a future interpretive narrative for the building. The design will reflect on the relationship of food technology to sustainability, including supporting the knowledge of traditional Musqueam food and medicine.
