Jessica Hanzelkova

Jes (she/they) is an emerging artist and Intern Architect AIBC with experience working in Vancouver, Toronto, and New York.

She brings three years of experience working on small-scale residential and retail projects involving high levels of custom detailing, fun material explorations, and as-built site conditions.

Scaling up at Human Studio, Jes is currently working on the construction documentation phase for Arbutus Supportive Housing, as well as 222 East Georgia, an intergenerational partnership between the Yee Fung Toy Society of Canada and 221A Artist Run Society. She is also running HS’s socials and spearheading a deep dive into how we understand and acknowledge the unceeded lands on which we live and work. Through her work she hopes to realize an architecture in the service of others and as a way to build the supportive, caring, joyful, and diverse communities and built ecologies we dream of.

Jes kick-started her practice as an artist by receiving the AIA medal and certificate for her architectural thesis titled “The Artifacts of No-Place”. She is currently working on a project titled “Latent Shores” funded by the Canada Council of the Arts; fusing her interests in Cantonese Opera, ornamentalism, somatics, speculative futures, performance art, and traditional Chinese knotting.
