The University of Calgary’s Energy Environment and Experiential Learning (EEEL) Building is a student-centric building designed to provide opportunities for hands-on and experiential learning in both individual and collaborative settings. EEEL building brings together multiple departments in the Science and Engineering faculties, promoting cross-pollination, integration, and collaborative research.

EEEL demonstrates what is possible when imagining how a building can contribute to the overall mission of the program that it holds. EEEL set out to create a highly flexible teaching lab environment that allowed ideas to mix and build off each other by creating visibility into labs and spaces outside of labs for people to interact.

The need to create a flexible and adaptable lab system is central to EEEL’s design. The modular lab and classroom layout along with a strategic mechanical & electrical servicing design allows for EEEL to respond to current and future laboratory needs of an ever evolving academic environment.

The EEEL building was certified with LEED® Platinum status. EEEL is one of the largest LEED platinum certified laboratory buildings in North America. It was also awarded the AZ Award of Merit, Environmental Leadership in 2015.
